May 9, 2025 - New Update on the Status of the Route 144 Complete Streets Traffic Study.

The Town and MJ Engineering met with NYS Department of Transportation (DOT) last Friday, May 2nd, to review the types of work proposed by MJ in their Concept Plan to remedy road hazards and improve vehicle and pedestrian safety along the study corridor (Route 144 from the Greene County/Albany County line to Gill Road).

The meeting was extremely productive with great questions, discussions and suggestions raised by the group. DOT was very supportive of the plan and understand the need to improve safety. MJ has updated the Plan based on the meeting discussions and will provide a Complete Streets Report to the Town. The finalized Concept Plan will be posted on the project website for residents to review in advance of a second public meeting on the project, where residents will be able to ask questions, make suggestions and raise any concerns. Once a date is determined for the public meeting, the Town will get advanced notice out to residents.

Existing Conditions: The existing conditions assessment of the study corridor of Rte 144 in New Baltimore, New York, was completed in July of 2024 and a meeting was held with the Town to discuss the findings. Following this discussion, a public information meeting was held.

Public Engagement: This study and project was designed to include two public hearings, the first of which was held on November 14, 2024 at the Cornell Hook and Ladder firehouse to discuss the findings of the existing conditions investigation, conducted by MJ Engineering and presented to the Town. Links to the informational materials presented to the public at that meeting is available on the “Engagement” tab of this website. Thirty-three members of the public attended this meeting and provided feedback on their own experiences and concerns of road and traffic conditions along the study corridor of Rte 144 in the Town of New Baltimore, and also asked many questions of the MJ Engineering staff conducting the road conditions study. Comments have also been submitted by the public on the “Contact” tab of this website.

Next Steps: The next step is that the MJ engineering staff will present, to the New Baltimore Town Board, their draft “concept plans” for the study corridor. These concept plans are suggestions of the types of work that can be considered to be done to to make the improvements identified in the study and discussed with residents. MJ is expected to provide the Town with these concept plans during the month of February, 2025. Following the Town’s review and discussion of these recommendations with the MJ staff, a meeting will be held for a review of options by the NYS Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), which has provided the funding for the initial study, and which will work with the Town and MJ on determining priority work and identifying funding for remediation/improvement efforts.

Following the discussion with NYSDOT a second public meeting will be held to inform/discuss the proposed remediation plans with residents. The expectation is that this second public meeting will be held in the Spring, 2025. The public will be notified prior to the meeting through advertisement in local publications and establishments, the Town website, and project website.

Following coordination with NYSDOT and development of the Draft Complete Streets Study, the second public meeting will be held in Winter/Early Spring 2025 to solicit feedback from the public on the concepts proposed.

The Final Complete Streets Study will incorporate input from the Town, project stakeholders and the public. The Final Study is anticipated to be complete in Late Spring 2025.
