What is the Purpose of the Study? The purpose of this study is to use a complete streets philosophy to examine the currently existing conditions of the NY Route 144 study corridor and identify the potential changes or enhancements that could benefit the Town residents and transform that area into a safe and accessible corridor for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists, via safety improvements to the roadway infrastructure, "traffic calming/speed reduction techniques" and safe and convenient pedestrian movement that is utilized in the community's daily life.

Who is involved?

  • The Town has created a group of representatives that will assist in guiding the study:

    • Town Supervisor​ Jeff Ruso

    • Town Deputy Supervisor Nick Dellisanti

    • Town Council Member Debra Sottolano

  • The Town of Baltimore has engaged M.J. Engineering, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Land Surveying, P.C. as the project consultant.

  • Representatives of the NYS Department of Transportation, Region 1:

    • NY Route 144 is owned and maintained by the NYSDOT and we will coordinate closely with that agency throughout the study process. ​

What are some challenges presented along the NY Route 144 corridor?​

  • Limited shoulder width of roads

  • Overall pavement width restrictions

  • Guide rail needs and steep slopes on both sides

  • Utility pole conflicts

  • Safety Concerns

  • Pedestrian crossings and signage 

  • Pedestrian and bicycle usability

  • Need for realignment of intersections with limited sight distance

  • Freight movement 

  • Tight curves
